For a time, James said nothing, conflicted in a battle of self-debate. Of all people in the Institute, Emily was the one person he could trust not to tell his mother....so theoretically if he DID let her in, she'd pose no problem.
On the other hand, they WERE best friends and part of that meant caring for one another; even without his mother's knowledge, letting Emily know he was planning to drive out in the middle of a REALLY cold evening, infiltrate Striker's Island and HOPE Magneto, Emma and the rest of the brotherhood didn't kill him before he could convince his father to come home.....that wouldn't end well either.
So James just stood there, silent, torn....trying to find the right thing to say.
"I....I can't. I'm sorry."

Emily frowned, slightly hurt by the response. She knew James wouldn't exclude her ifhe didn' have a good reason. He cared about her and she cared about him. She wasn't going to let him rush off to do whatever he was planning without back up.
She'd have to be sneaky.
"Right." Emily said, giving James a weak smile "I'll keep your mother off the scent for as long as I can. I can't promise a miracle but she hopefully won't know you've left."
Then, she threw her armaround his neck and pulled him into a tight hug. She hoped that by the time she had managed to catch up with him he wouldn't be in danger, still the thought of him going out on his own into danger scared her.
"And be careful, ok?"

Admittedly, Emily's quick acceptance of his decision surprised him, and had he been able to read her mind, he would have. But, as she tended to keep mental shields up most of the time, he couldn't tell what she was thinking without her permission to do so. And he didn't have time for that. His father was broken, weak...who knew how much longer he'd last in his current environment.
So instead, he resigned to her hug, holding her tightly to him for a few seconds, before pulling back, flushed--just a bit--and determined.
"I will." He stated firmly. "I swear."
The Xavier boy turned then, placing his helmet over his head and--after double-backing to re-retrieve his backpack (and trying not to imagine how contradictory that looked)--hopped on his bike.
"Open the garage for me?" He asked--though it sounded more of a request--over the hum of the engine.

Emily took at step back from James, her expression somewhere between worried and accepting. She smirked as James had to retrieve the backpack before mounting his bike. She moved to the garage door and flung it wide, shuddering at the blast of icy wind which blew in her face.
The snow was still coming down in thick sheets and her nerves made themselves known once more. If Magneto and Emma didn't get James then she was sure the weather might have a good go at trying to kill him.
"Good luck." she said, moving out of his way.

Holy. Shit.
"Cold" didn't even begin to describe the biting, bitter air smacking against him as he rode off - damn, it'd been a long time since he'd gone for a winter ride. A really, really really long time. Granted, he hadn't been out much at ALL during this season at all....but then, he normally had nosy adults warring him against such a thing. "It's dangerous, it's slippery, you could slide on ice and crash" and all the other adult jargon he only heeded when necessary. Of which now was not. Right now, someone else was in danger--someone else trapped under unyielding eyes. Someone far more helpless than a fifteen year old on a motorbike in the middle of a winter evening.
Hang on, dad; I'm coming to take you home.

Emily stood at the garage doors and watched as James rode off. She'd catch up with him sooner or later. He wouldn't go without backup and she'd make sure of that.
When he had finally disappeared from view Emily charged up to her room and immediately set to work. First came her uniform, then her boots, gloves and several layers to keep warm. She put food, change of clothes and other essentials into a backpack and slung it over her shoulder.
Hang on, James, I'm on my way
Then the next problem presented itself. She didn't know where James was going and even if she did she had. I transport to get her there. She bit her lip in thought for a moment before moving to her drawers once more. She carefully shifted the items out of the way until she came to a small device. It was what brought her to this universe and hopefully it would take her to James.
Then in a flash of light, she was gone.

Note to self; next time you go off on an excursion, wait until it's not snowing.
James swore under his breath, teeth grit together to keep from chattering as he drove on. He'd been on the road for a good half hour and was beginning to think he'd gone and gotten himself lost. And, given that he had no map and was relying on his family's memories to guide him, being lost was highly probable.
As if he needed any further complications....
No no...he couldn't think like that. This WAS going to work and he WAS going to rescue his father and they WERE going to go back home and everyone would FINALLY see what really happened to the man after all those years apart.
He just...needed to keep going.
Keep going.
Keep going....

Emily fell.
With a yelp she plummeted and hit the ground with a resounding smack. She'd appeared about five foot in the air and had landed on her back, not hard enough to cause any major injury...but hard enough that it still hurt. That was the major flaw with universe jumping, she couldn't control where exactly in the world she'd end up which made entering a universe one of the most dangerous parts, she still had scars criss-crossing her back from one disastrous entry.
She winced slightly as she pushed herself to her feet again, her mind was on James. She hoped that she'd managed to land somewhere near him. It was then that she heard something move, her grey eyes jumped around, trying to discern what exactly she'd heard.
Something smacked the back of her head and blackness rushed to meet her.
