I'm honestly surprised at how few people know about this series. Or how so many people know the characters but are not the least bit curious about their origins. Well, anyway, if you've played any of the Super Smash Bros. series, you'll likely know of Ness, and if you've played Brawl, you'll know of Lucas.
My first Earthbound/Mother game was Mother 3, which I completely adore with all of my heart. I'll be honest and say I haven't played Mother 2 yet. After I ended up beating Mother 3, I went to play the first one and it is very, very hard. But I still wanna beat it.
If you haven't played any of these games, then I highly recommend them to you. They're dark, especially for Nintendo games, but have comedy mixed in as well to balance it out. Also, you don't have to play the games in order to understand them. Just saying, because I did play out of order. Sadly, only the second one was released in English. However, Mother 3 was fan translated, and so if anyone DOES actually want a ROM, I could get that one easily. I could also get the first Mother as well. As for Mother 2, I don't have it, but you should be able to find it easier than the others.

My dear cousin Noah introduced me to this game, as well as Legend of Zelda. I've never played it and neither has he, but he's watched Chuggaconroy's LP of the games, something I'm yet to do. They certainly sound interesting, and I would LOVE to one day play them.

You'll love the games, I'm sure. Mother 3 remains my favorite, because I just the adore the characters so much...although there's two specific ones that I spammed art of on my dA about a month ago, haha. But yeah, it's a very fun, very emotional video game series, although the games do have variation.
