Okay, this is actually a webcomic rather than a book, but it should still count, I guess. Plus they do sell a book of it now.
ANYWAY...
Bittersweet Candy Bowl is a comic I've been closely following for a couple of years now. Around that time I was reading a TON of webcomics, but BCB was the only one that held my interest enough to keep reading it. I definitely recommend it. I can't give you a total plot summary, but it's rather similar in terms of overall plot.
Mike and Lucy are childhood friends, going through highschool now with the rest of their peers, and new friends along the way.
May not sound interesting on the get-go, but it's more promising than I make it sound. It is dramatic, funny, and oh God, the angst. One reason I find it so compelling, besides the writing itself and the main cast, is the fact that the author expertly melds these so you don't get overwhelmed by angst in one chapter or find one completely slapstick.
Also, the main cast are anthro cats and one dog. If you pass this off as a furry comic because I say this, I will seriously slap you in the freaking face. Too many people assume it's about cats and dogs having sex because the cast happens to consist of dogs and cats. The comic does have mature themes at times, but get over it, they're in high school. :U
www.bittersweetcandybowl.com Give it a read, if you please. Seriously. Also, don't be surprised at the drastic art change after the first chapter. The older pages are, well, older, and she went back and remade the first chapter.
