Zecora's 'cutie mark'

I wanna know what you guys think (mostly because my pony-sona is a zebra) whether the markings on Zecora's flank are a cutie mark or just a pattern of stripes?

See a big part of Zee's character is she wants to have a cutie mark like other ponies (because she was raised around ponies all her life and not zebras) but she can't because she is a zebra. HOWEVER, if Zecora's stripes are in fact a cutie mark, I'm going to have to change some things up.

So what do you guys think?

I think her mark was painted on. I thought of this when I re-watched TLK, during the scene where Rafiki put the red paint over his drawing of Simba.

BUT, in the 80s, there was some Animal MLP toys. (Mostly Giraffes and Camels) They had cutie marks, I think.

It depends on whether you want to think of G1 as canon in your AU or not. ^^
