So I'm back on a Soul Eater kick, and after watching a few AMVs I got to wondering how things would have turned out if one thing in the very beginning of the story had been changed. What if it was Maka that was wounded by Crona instead of Soul?
All plays out as per usual in the storyline up until Maka and Soul arrive in the cathedral where Crona claimed all the innocent souls that he did for Ragnarok. Once Maka and Soul find themselves trapped within the building, the fight begins between meisters and weapons. Maka seems to hold her own with Soul for a time, but it's not long before Crona and Ragnarok overpower them. A particularly powerful Screech Alpha from Ragnarok knocks Maka back, sending Soul flying from her hands while he's still in scythe form, and leaving the meister and weapon separated. Before Soul even knows what's happening, Crona advances on the downed Maka and prepares to make his move. Soul goes to try and protect his meister, but ultimately fails. Maka is severely wounded by Crona before Soul can make it over to protect her.
Enter Stein and Spirit just moments too late to take over the fighting. Before they can begin, though, Spirit takes note of the fact that his daughter has been seriously injured. Initially he places the blame on Soul, as he never liked Soul, but Stein is quick to point out that perhaps Soul hadn't been able to get to Maka in time. Although not entirely placated by this, Spirit accepts the explanation and helps Stein fight off Crona.
What follows after Crona flees is a particularly tense and worrisome trip back to the DWMA for Spirit and Soul. Neither speaks to the other during the trip, both focusing their worries on Maka as her life hangs in the balance. Soul blames himself for Maka being injured. If he'd been faster he'd have been able to protect his meister. Spirit partly blames himself as well. If he and Stein had arrived just a few moments sooner, they could have prevented Maka being hurt. Ultimately they do make it back to the DWMA with enough time for Stein to successfully patch Maka up, and she's put into intensive care in the school infirmary.
Soul spends the days following the failed mission trying to cope with the fact that he failed to protect his meister. Black*Star tries to cheer him up, even offering to allow Soul to accompany him and Kid to find the holy sword Excalibur, but nothing works. What follows is a very awkward moment between Soul and Spirit as they encounter one another on the roof. It results in a conversation neither expected to have, and they talk about their respective concerns for Maka. While Soul still doesn't entirely like Spirit, and while Spirit shares equal feelings, they come to find that maybe the other isn't as bad as they thought.
Finally, Maka is able to leave the infirmary. She feels bad about allowing her and Soul to become separated during the fight and vows to become stronger so it won't happen again. Unbeknownst to Maka and Soul, something odd is going on within Maka's body. The black blood within Ragnarok infected Maka when she was struck by his blade. Although the affects of the blood remain unknown to Maka, Stein decides to keep an eye on her. Just in case.
And... that's all I have fleshed out for the moment. I'm thinking the second fight between Crona and Maka might end up going a bit differently in this AU, but I haven't worked out what would happen just yet. I also haven't quite worked out what the black blood's affect would be on Maka, but I will try to work it out.
So... thoughts?
