Pre-movie thread for Partner and myself.
Phantom - Vanellope Partner - Adorabeezle
"Please tell me the coast is clear. Please..."
Vanellope glanced to the left, the right, and the left one last time. It seemed that the world had been out to get her from the moment she had left Diet Cola Mountain. An unfortunate run-in with Taffyta while she'd been trying to gather lollipops for breakfast had let to a scuffle and several broken lollipops. The evidence was all over the left side of Vanellope's hoodie, particularly along the arm of it, and her right arm had a bruise hidden beneath the folds of the hoodie's fabric. Her hair was messed up some, too. Not long after that, Rancis and Gloyd had found her in the junkyard while she'd been looking for pieces for her pedal kart. One thing had led to another, and a huge pile of junk had come crashing down on her. After pulling herself out of that mess, she'd run away and decided to hide out in the candy cane forest for a while.
She'd ventured out of the forest at long last and was looking around a more open area of the game. She was starving by that point, having been cheated out of lollipops and not being in the mood for candy canes, and she desperately wanted to get something in her. This particular area was known for housing chocolate chip cookies. If no one else was around, Vanellope could get some and make a run for Diet Cola Mountain with her meal. Her cautiousness was a direct result of being picked on more than once that day. Her nerves brought on a sharp glitch spasm, causing her to wince in pain as the blue coding seized her body, and when it settled out Vanellope seemed to be set on going forth. If she didn't go then, she'd miss out on a meal again and would have to just go with being hungry for the rest of the day.
"Okay... Here we go," Vanellope said. She stepped out into view and approached a particularly large hunk of chocolate chip cookie. As she broke off pieces, her body glitched and twitched nervously and her eyes darted around as though anticipating someone to mess with her. Her mannerisms were almost like those of an abused animal going to eat and expecting someone to take their food away. By that point, though, Vanellope didn't care. She just didn't want to be picked on anymore.
...Maybe the day was getting better. She didn't see anyone around, at any rate. Maybe the other kids had finally gotten sick of picking on her and decided to leave her alone for the rest of the day.

Unfortunately for Vanellope, her morning was probably about to be ruined. Yet again.
"What are you doing here?" In spite of her reputation for being much more amiable than your average ice-themed racer would be expected to be, there was nothing friendly about the other girl's tone right now. Hands on her hips, Adorabeezle Winterpop regarded Vanellope coldly. Not being on the day's race roster, she had just been driving fairly aimlessly when she'd caught sight of a telltale flicker of blue code from behind a cookie mound, hopped out of her kart to investigate, and found none other than public enemy number 1. Adorabeezle didn't think of herself as mean; as long as the little glitch kept to her own turf, way out in the candy cane forest or wherever, Adorabeezle didn't have too much of a problem with her, not to the extent her fellow racers had. But when the glitch ventured closer to the heart of Sugar Rush, that was when Adorabeezle took issue with her.
"You're not meant to be here. I should tell King Candy, or... something." What could she do, anyway? Adorabeezle didn't want to get too close - was glitching contagious? - but she doubted King Candy would give her the time of day even if she did try and tell him. He was the king, after all... probably was busy. But she couldn't just let Vanellope carry on being here, either.

Her code ran cold upon hearing that voice. Vanellope stopped what she was doing, hastily stuffing what pieces she had broken off into her hoodie's pockets, and whipped around to face the other girl. Adorabeezle... On most occasions, Vanellope was lucky enough to generally keep out of the Popsicle-themed racer's way. Today, as the glitched girl was apt to find out more than once, just wasn't her day. Another sharp glitch spasm seized the hungry little girl and she gulped audibly, hoping to cover up the sound of her growling stomach with either of the other sounds. Vanellope shouldn't have gotten her hopes up either way, though. If she was having this amount of bad luck in avoiding the other kids, then there was no chance Adorabeezle would miss hearing how pathetic she must have sounded.
"I-I was just getting some cookie chunks," Vanellope said. She held her hands out for Adorabeezle to see, revealing the crumbs that were still sticking to her palms and between her fingers, before taking a small step back as her body glitched again. She almost wished there was some way she could get better control over that much. It would have made things a lot easier on everyone involved if she didn't glitch and twitch all the dang time.
"What? Does King Candy suddenly got somethin' against me tryin' to eat, too? And here I thought it was just racin' he had a problem with me doing," Vanellope said. Some of her spunk still seemed to linger in that brief moment. Was it dangerous to play that game? Absolutely. By that point, though, Vanellope was far too hungry to really care about who she was blunt with.
"Or was it racin' and existin' he had a problem with? Either way, I... I don't see what problem there is with me comin' out to get a snack. I'm not hurtin' anyone..."

Adorabeezle frowned. Though she was incredibly short on sympathy when it came to the glitch, the ice-themed racer didn't for a moment miss how hungry and pathetic Vanellope appeared. Would it really hurt to let the smaller girl scamper off with a few crumbs? She knew she shouldn't even be thinking that way; King Candy said the glitched girl wasn't allowed anywhere near the racetrack, and this area was closer that she would typically be tolerated. If the donut cops caught her letting Vanellope steal, even if it was just small cookie chunks that no-one would miss, Adorabeezle was sure she'd be in trouble.
But even if she didn't like Vanellope any more than anyone else, forcing her to starve seemed a bit harsh...
Wait, starve? They were in a world made completely of sweets and candy; how on earth was anyone meant to starve here, even if they couldn't have cookies?
"I think it's existing, yeah," she confirmed, deciding not to think too much on Vanellope's current state of hunger. She wouldn't stop the glitch from breaking off a few cookie chunks while she was here, but Adorabeezle decided that in a few moments she'd get her kart and run Vanellope away from the area. Maybe that would even earn her a few brownie points with King Candy, who knew? "Point is, your nearer to the tracks than he says you're allowed. I don't know if he thinks you're going to sabotage the course or something, but he is our ruler, and if he says you're not allowed..."

Were she a canine, her ears surely would have drooped upon hearing what Adorabeezle had to say. Namely, how she was too close to the general track area and needed to back off. Another glitch spasm followed, and Vanellope reluctantly took a few steps away from where she had been standing before. At least she had pocketed a few hunks of cookie for later. That was something, even if it wasn't much, that could at least carry her further into the day. She wouldn't have had a problem getting anything to eat if she wasn't so concerned about the other kids seeing her. Years of being picked on up until that point had made Vanellope more wary and less willing to boldly venture out beyond Diet Cola Mountain or the candy cane forest. The junkyard was generally safe, but didn't leave much in the means of food. Even though she lived in a game made up entirely of sweets, it was plain to see she struggled every now and again. Not that it mattered...
"Okay, okay... I'm backin' off. Not lookin' for trouble here," Vanellope said. Her present state was more than enough proof of the fact that she'd been through some bullying already. It was like the three she'd already run into had just been out to make her day miserable. What about Adorabeezle, though? Vanellope had never really thought about it, but the other girl was never supremely vocal when it came to picking on her. What was her story?
"...Never really thought I'd see you by yourself. Don't'cha usually hang out with the others?" Vanellope asked. She didn't know why she was striking up conversation, or at least attempting to, but there it was. Vanellope couldn't help but be a little curious in the face of seeing one of her usual tormenters, if that even was the right way of thinking about it, all on her own. Would this become a regular thing, or had she just gotten lucky in seeing Adorabeezle by herself?

"Well, I got unlucky. Didn't get on the race roster for today," the dark-blue-haired girl shrugged. Most of the others - at least those she'd usually hang out with off the track - had, and so they were out there racing, while she was left with the options of seeking out the likes of Gloyd and Rancis, who she didn't know at all well, or just sticking to her own company. Since the ice-themed racer did enjoy solitude every now and again, she had opted for the latter.
Wait... why was she humouring the glitch by answering her questions? Anyone else would already be running Vanellope off the property... but here she was, just standing and talking. It wasn't that she liked the glitch, of course not, but... well, truth be told, off the track Adorabeezle didn't have much in the way of guts. It was why she'd go along with the crowd without complaint when Taffyta and the others would torment Vanellope; it was also why, on her own with the glitch like this, she didn't really have the inclination to act antagonistically.
She couldn't stand here talking to the little outlaw forever, though. She was gonna have to make some move against Vanellope, and make it soon.

"You? Didn't get on the roster?" Vanellope repeated. She'd have thought that Adorabeezle was always on the roster. On the other hand, what did she know about what racers were on the roster? All she really knew was that King Candy always managed to get on it somehow or another. She wondered how he did it, and Vanellope would've given anything to be on the roster. Her inner longing made itself evident in her eyes as she glanced away and a very slight glitch spasm followed. Vanellope would have given anything in the whole game to be a racer. She might've even given her arm or a leg to do it. But, what were the chances she could actually do it? Getting a coin and a kart was near impossible for her.
"Racin' musta been real tough if you didn't get on the roster. I'd've thought you were a pro," she said. Was it flattery, or was Vanellope really convinced the other girl was good? She didn't know for certain. But her thoughts were out in the open air, and now it was unlikely that they could be taken away.

"Hmph. I'm not that good," Adorabeezle returned. She wasn't sure if she felt flattered that Vanellope had thought she was that good or not. Had it been anyone else, she probably would have; but it was sort of different when it was the glitch. After all, what did Vanellope even know about racing talent at all? She was likely speaking out of total ignorance more than anything else. She knew that Vanellope wanted to race, even without seeing the longing in the other girl's eyes, but even if the glitch had a kart, wanting to race and knowing enough to be able to race were two totally different things.
Speaking of karts... Vanellope wasn't thinking about stealing her own, was she? The glitch was basically a criminal, after all; Adorabeezle wouldn't have put it past her. Blue-haired girl cast a glance back at her popsicle-shaped kart, reassuring herself that is was still there and safe from whatever Vanellope may or may not have been planning. "It depends on the track that gets chosen; I'm better at some than others," she added by way of an explanation. The track was never exactly the same each day, varying the scenery that was thrown at the racers and the players to make the whole thing more interesting. "Gumball Gorge is my best stretch, and the track missed that out today." She gave a shrug.
"Ugh, why am I still talking to you? No offense," she added quickly, not sure why she cared if Vanellope took offense or not. She was just a glitch anyway. "But King Candy would kill me if he saw this."

Instinctively, Vanellope drew back another couple of paces. She didn't like the prospect of getting chased off, but it seemed entirely possible with the situation being as it was. At the end of the day, she was a glitch and Adorabeezle was a racer. It was only natural that she'd be chased off sooner or later. Vanellope may not have been doing anything at that moment, and it may have been true that it was just her and Adorabeezle there, but the truth of the matter was that sooner or later someone would expect the icy racer to get rid of her. Vanellope couldn't deny that this was the inevitable.
"I-It's not like anyone else is here. Who's gonna know?" Vanellope asked. She was being dumb; no one would want to spend any more time with her than Adorabeezle had. Vanellope could even feel the awkwardness coming off of the situation in waves. There was no getting around it anymore. She was either going to be scared off or actually chased off. Neither was going to be pleasant, but both were possible. She just didn't know which was inevitably going to happen.

Vanellope did have a point. Though there was still the chance of one of the donut cops wandering past and mistaking her for a glitch sympathiser - which she definately wasn't.
She could just... leave Vanellope here, pretend she hadn't seen anything if anyone asked. But then it would be Vanellope who might go away with the wrong impression. And she really didn't want the glitch to think she had a friend in her. For a moment, Adorabeezle fingered the furry collar of her jacket in silence, trying to think if she had any other options.
If she did, she couldn't see them. No, she'd have to be assertive here - even if she hated being that off the racetrack. The ice-themed racer swallowed, grit her teeth, gathering her courage. Then, when she felt reasonably confident - well, somewhat confident, at least - in what she had to do, she reached out and gave Vanellope a shove. Not hard enough to knock the glitch off her feet, but none too gently either. "Someone's bound to find out. I'm risking my status as a racer by standing here talking to someone like you." The words came out more as a plea , betraying Adorabeezle's discomfort with the way she was acting. Even if Vanellope was nothing more than a glitch, doing thus felt to the racer as if it went against her nature. She had no qualms about watching Taffyta or the others torment the glitch, it was true, but doing so herself was a whole other matter.
She hoped she wasn't going to pick up some glitch disease or something from touching the other girl. Was being a glitch contagious, anyway?
