(Yay!! XDDD Lovin' the name!)
He didn't realize her face had fallen until he'd finished explaining himself, but once he did, a twinge of guilt tugged at his heart. They'd just met, and already he'd made her feel bad. Nice going.
"Don't apologize." He piped up, covering the previous confliction in his voice and hoping he'd succeeded "I never knew him--he left before I was born....really it doesn't bother me." Not a lie, not a truth, but he didn't feel like dropping the bombshell that was his family history on her at the moment. As previously mentioned they'd just met.
Hoping to draw her attention away from himself, his dialect turned now to the second half of her previous question. "No one here--well...very few--have their parents present. The uh...the gene that makes me like I am usually kicks in around twelve or thirteen so most of the students are that age or a little older. There are a few older ones that joined later...but it's mostly kids."

(I know right? Portamanteau names are fun ^^)
Emily glanced up at James again. She listened to his attempt at back tracking. So his father had left...she didn't know her father either...he had died when she had been very young. She knew how it felt somewhat.
Then the topic change to the Institute again. Relief flooded her system at this. According to James it was mostly teenagers like themselves rather than adults. She didn't know whether that was a good thing or bad at that moment but she would reserve judgement.
"Gene?" she asked "What gene?"

Well...she didn't look hurt anymore. Just...confused.
"You don't--" He stopped himself. MOST mutants (or even those aware of them without gifts themselves) didn't know why they'd suddenly be able to do superhuman things--he probably wouldn't have known had he not been born and raised in the institute himself. "--sorry. The 'X' gene; the one all mutants have. It gives them their powers--it's why I can read minds." He finished with a light smile, hoping he hadn't overwhelmed her. She didn't seem like a threat and as she'd seemed to calm down after a time when he'd spoken telepathically with her, she probably wasn't one.

A gene that gave people powers? That she had never heard of before. She wondered if she might possibly be one of these people...they had called her a 'sheilder' and explained that people like her were rare and quite powerful...did that mean she was like James?
"How can you tell if someone has this gene...apart from the powers obviously. Are there any other characteristics?" she asked "I know that where I come from there aren't any people like that. The only 'power' I've ever heard of is shielding and that's incredibly rare."

Again he smiled; his lips this time curled up in a sort of amusement. He hadn't met anyone so invested in his--their?--kind since....since he could remember.
"Sometimes." James told her, releasing her hand now and using it to gesture at his oddly-colored eyes. "Sometimes we're born with physical differences." He took a step back then, indicating towards the hall behind him. "But why don't we continue this inside? You look tired." and besides which, I'd like to move somewhere before mom walks by. The latter he added only to himself.

Emily couldn't help but return James's smile slightly. It had been an incredibly long time since she had any sort of social interaction. Plus, there was the chance that she and James could both share this special gene he had talked about. She might be like him.
She studied the building for a brief moment before giving a small nod.
"Yeah. I think that's a good idea."

"Great." He replied eagerly, moving another step or two back to allow her full entry "follow me."
It didn't take long for the two to reach the parlor and--thankfully--it WAS empty. Class must be in session. Or something. Walking around the oval-shaped glass table in the center of the room, he flopped down in one of the love seats, indicating her to take the one opposite him. "Go ahead, sit down. They're comfortable, I promise."

It was a few seconds before Emily took the loveseat opposite James. Her eyes wandered around the room, it was large and it was well decorated...it almost seemed more like a large home than some kind of school for superpowered teenagers. Her eyes then focused on James again.
"So...this gene...it gives you powers and can alter your appearance right?" she asked tommake sure she had understood what he had told her.

"Yep." James said, easing back into his chair--it WAS his home, after all; no need to be polite. Again he pointed to his eyes, widening them a little to better display their unusual coloring. "Sometimes you only get little differences, like mine here. Or Hank's--he's one of the professors--before he...sorry, long story. Uh..." The teen again stopped himself, forcing his thoughts to simplify and NOT confuse her further. "....basically, some mutations are small. Some are larger. My mom, for example. Her skin's blue. And her eyes are the same color as mine."

Emily tried no to let the surprise show on her face at James's words. Her eyes dropped to her lap for a brief second before looking back up at James. Every responce she could think of sounded rude...what could you say to that without accidentily insulting his mother?
"And I thought shielding was out of the oridinary...it must really suck for your mom." she said after a minute.
She tried to imagine having blue skin and found she couldn't. James's mom must have really pulled the short straw when it came to her genes...she's stand out like a sore thumb wherever she went. To Emily, who was incredibly used to blending into the background, it seemed like the cruellest joke the universe could pull on a person.

A wry smile tugged at the golden-eyed boy's lips; her words bringing him an unusual tickle of amusement.
"I've...never quite heard it put that way" he said slowly, grinning at the girl, "But...yeah. Haha....yeah it does." A beat. "or did. She isn't bothered by it too much anymore."
That was true enough--before her life had been thrown against a wall his mother HAD learned to accept her true self. And with his "step-father's" OWN condition....well...scales and bright red hair were nothing compared to animalistic fur.
"I've seen all sorts of mutations." He said aloud instead--deciding to again, leave his family history under the carpet "nothing really surprises me anymore. Heck, you could've walked in here with three heads and I would've still opened the door for you." A light laugh accompanied his final words; hoping he hadn't given off a heavy attitude. This subject, for all the weight attached, was still something he enjoyed discussing.
Especially to someone interested, yet naive to the mutant world.

Emily gave a small chuckle at Jame's words. The image of herself with three heads was very amusing. Yet, that implied that James had seen things far wierder than she.
"Well then I think I'm pretty normal by your standards...all I can do is shield." she said.
Of course, Emily had neglected to mention her age, which would probably set her apart from any mutant James had met. Being over two thousand years old wasn't 'normal' by any standard.

There she went again. Mentioning that word. He'd heard it before but in his own excitement casually overlooked it.
"Shielding?" He inquired, deciding to break his rule for once and be the one asking questions "what is that, exactly?"

Emily bit her lip in thought for a minute, trying to come up with an acutate summise of her ability.
"Well...it's kind of a power, like your telepathy, and I was born with it." she began after a few seconds of silence "You know...I think it would be easier for me to show you than explain it..."
Emily sat in thought for a few seconds more, thinking about how to show James her ability without causing unnecessry damage to the room. Eventually she looked up.
"Could you try to read my mind? I'll think of something I haven't told anyone in a long time." she suggested.

Huh. This was bound to be interesting.
"Alright." James replied, tapping his left hand to his temple, lowering his brow in concentration. "Let me see what I can find...."
