Emily had her shield up and ready in her mind. A solid block between James and the information he was seeking. She could already feel him pressing against her shield. Also, just in case, she had a second shield under that...although that one was made up of random information her favourite colour, early childhood memories and other such information designed to send James searching in the wrong direction.
The information was simple. I am Emily Clearwater and I am two thousand five hundred and sixteen years old. Her true name and age.
"Anything?" she asked innocently.

James frowned. The information was there--he could feel it, like fishing for a trout in murky water....but....
"No...I don't know what you're thinking." He confessed, perplexed but not overly so. This must be what she meant..."so...these...shields of yours...they block out other peoples' thoughts?"

"Yes. They keep anything or anyone I don't want in here" Emily replied tapping her forehead "from getting any information. I've a lot of things I'd rather not say...I can project them outside of my body as well...they're kinda like force fields."
She dropped her shields after a few minutes, giving James full access to her thought. I am Emily Clearwater and I am two thousand five hundred and sixteen years old. Her gaze went to her lap as she waited for his reaction to that little titbit.

At first, he thought she was joking.
He thought she HAD to be joking.
Two....two thousand five hundred and...?!
But she only looked--!
Calm down...calm DOWN, James. This isn't the first time you've seen someone with slowed aging....
That was true....but Logan...he'd only lived a mere two centuries (although calling it "mere" was a laugh in itself)....but this girl....
How.... he answered, slowly, carefully, resorting to telepathy in case his vocal chords betrayed him, How is it you've...lived so long? You don't look a day older than me!

"It's a long story." she replied to his telepathic message "I'm biologically sixteen. I haven't aged physically since my sixteenth birthday."
Her grey eyes focused on James's face once again. He had sounded very shocked and she wasn't surprised at this. If she didn't know any better she would have been shocked too. A person over two millenia old was not something that someone saw everyday, even someone like James.
"Because I've been exposed to the time stream, my theory is that I must have erased myself from the timeline of my universe...and since I don't belong to a timeline...I haven't aged. At least that's what I think."

The words were out of his mouth before he could catch them "You can DO that?"
....
...
Nice job, James. REAL nice job.
"Remove yourself from time...I mean...." the telepath added quickly, shoving aside his surprise in the hopes he hadn't pushed her too far into an awkward corner. He so hated doing that....he knew the feeling far too well. "I haven't heard of anyone who could, uh...time travel?"

"Well...techniquely I just jumpped from universe to universe...the time stream connects every universe and you can't travel between them without exposing yourself to it." she answered "Like I said it's a long story and some bits I don't even understand...and it's my life."
Emily shifted slightly, she very rarely reflected on her 'adventures'. She had stuff to do and that meant little time to sit and think. Now that she did...she realized how little sense she seemed to make. She was an anomally of sorts.

It took several seconds to realize he'd been staring, and even when he did....he still felt...confused. "Uh...: he started, scratching his head "okay...let me see if I've got this...." yellow-gold met clear gray, studying her closely. "You aren't a time traveler....but a universe...hopper?" The last word was added for lack of a better one. "I didn't know there was more than one universe....wow."
James leaned deeper back into his chair, sweeping his long bangs out of his eyes. He'd suspected she might be a mutant earlier but this? This was a....lot to absorb.
"I didn't think there was more than one universe....wow.."

Emily cheeks tinged pink, she could feel James's eyes on her and after a few seconds she looked up. Now it was her on the recieving end of questions...which she should have expected given the nature of her 'revelation'.
"Essentially yes." Emily replied "I'm a 'universe hopper'...and yes, there is more than one universe. In fact...every decision you've ever made, that anyone's ever made, spawns a new universe. One decision can change a lot you know...even if that decision was what you had for breakfast this morning."

James said nothing for several seconds; his mind working in that way it usually did to piece together her information, trying to absorb the full of it as he did. This was quite the...challenge to grasp, even for him, and not because it wasn't believable but because it seemed like a LOT for one teenager girl to handle. He HAD seen some very demanding mutant abilities during his fifteen years but this...this was a bit much.
"....so...." he said after a moment, propping his chin up now with his hand and elbow "...it's like the butterfly effect, right? Changing even little things can have a grand impact on the future?"
Admittedly he hadn't exactly WANTED to drag science fiction into this AGAIN, but habits die hard, and besides, it was the closest thing he could make a comparison to.
Provided she even knew what "the butterfly effect" even was.
Oh well..

"Yep. Almost exactly like that." Emily replied "There's a hundred different things that could spawn from one decision."
She twisted her fingers in her lap nervously, the more she spoke the more she began to reveal. She hadn't told someone this much ever. She tried not to get too close because, enevitably, she would have to leave.
"I really shouldn't be telling you all this." she said, trying to look anywhere but at him "I haven't talked to someone like this is millenia."

Now THAT caught him off guard.
"You haven't talked to ANYONE?" The startled boy inquired, sounding a bit more childish than he would've liked but not overly concerned with it. "Geez....I mean...." But again, he caught himself and cut out the ending; waiting to rephrase his statement before attempting to speak again. Jane--er, Emily--DID seem a bit on the shy side which usually indicated a person veered to solitude of their own will....and her discomfort now almost reaffirmed his first suspicions. If she hadn't said "millenia" he might have believed it. But even those withdrawn made conversation once in a while...to go so long without making conversation at ALL suggested, maybe, that it wasn't a choice so much as a....duty of some kind.
Though what, he couldn't be sure.
Instead of reiterating his train of thought aloud, James whittled it down to the very essence, and asked an age old yet perfectly appropriate question; "Why?"

"Because...eventually...I'll have to leave and it's best not to get too attached because then it won't hurt so much." she said softly.
Emily felt like drawing her knees up to her chest, this topic always brought feeling of depression to the surface, but more than that...it forced her to confront just how lonely she really felt. She was incredibly lonely.
She didn't have any real friends, because she tried not to make them, and all her family probably thought she was dead. She had no one. Her task meant she had to keep going and moving from place to place over millenia...even if she did make a friend she'd never see them again.

Well. Looks like it was his turn to touch upon an uncomfortable subject, and watching Emily's already disheartened face darken further, a twinge of guilt prodded James' heart, as did her words to his mind. While his own circumstances weren't the best, he at least had a family, peers and a home he could return to at the end of the day. Emily--or so it seemed--had no one....
Sympathy for the girl slid over the golden-eyed boy's face. He couldn't imagine how hard it must be to live like that; saddled by a millenia's worth of loniness....
But that didn't mean he couldn't find out.
"Emily....." the dark-haired mutant asked slowly, raising his left hand up to the side of his face. "would you mind if I...?" He tapped his left temple with a finger. Would you mind if I saw for myself?

Emily looked up at James, her grey eyes studying him for a minute. She felt that she could trust him. She had ready revealled a lot of information about herself to him...what was a little more. She was aware that he could probably access everything in her mind but that was always the risk when around a telepath.
Ok... was her reply I trust you.
